The demand for transport continues to increase. Between 1995 and 2004 there was a 30% rise in demand, and the European Union expects a further increase of about 50% up to 2020. It is impossible and socially unacceptable to accommodate this increase via traditional road transport.

The costs of road transport are ever increasing due to rising oil prices, tolls, overcrowded roads and driving restrictions. We therefore have to switch to other, environmentally friendly alternatives: transport via water, the railways, air and pipelines. 'Multimodal transport' are the magic words for the future. The European Union is investing strongly in the European transport network, so that more and more alternative transport solutions are added to the existing ones.
